AI tools that write code reviews for pull requests

Last verified 2026-10-10Paid placement never changes our picks.

Short answer

As of October 2026, start with GitHub Copilot if your team already works on GitHub and wants review inside an existing plan, CodeRabbit if you host code on GitLab, Bitbucket or Azure DevOps, and Greptile if one developer wants a free tier to try. The main catch: many reviewers bill by credits or usage, so costs rise with pull-request volume.

How to choose

  • If you already pay for GitHub Copilot → test its code review first (included from the $10-a-month Pro plan; the free plan does not include review).
  • If your repositories are on GitLab or Bitbucket → CodeRabbit or Qodo (both list support beyond GitHub; CodeRabbit also lists Azure DevOps and is free for public repositories).
  • If you need self-hosting or strict data control → Greptile, Qodo or CodeRabbit at their Enterprise tiers, or run the open-source PR-Agent yourself and pay only for model usage.
  • If you want predictable costs → per-seat plans (CodeRabbit, Graphite) are steadier than credit or usage billing (Qodo, Greptile, Claude Code Review), which swings with how many pull requests you open.
  • If your team lives in Cursor or works with stacked pull requests → Cursor Bugbot (included on Cursor Teams) or Graphite (GitHub only), then pilot on 10 to 20 real pull requests and count useful comments versus noise.

Where sources disagree

  • Qodo free tier: Qodo's pricing FAQ says there is no permanent free tier, while page metadata mentions a free developer option; the PR-Agent repository says it is not Qodo's free tier.
  • Credit and usage pricing changes: GitHub now describes Copilot usage in AI credits instead of premium requests, and Claude Code Review is billed per review by token use, so costs per pull request are hard to compare across tools.
  • Graphite and Cursor: Graphite's homepage says Cursor cloud agents are now in Graphite, which suggests a link between the companies; we did not confirm ownership.
  • Review quality: Vendors publish their own accuracy benchmarks; we did not use them, and false-positive rates were not tested here.
