AI photo restoration can reduce scratches, noise, blur, fading, and compression damage, but it often invents plausible pixels rather than recovering lost facts. Use it to create a viewing copy, not to overwrite the source or silently redefine a person's face, clothing, place, or historical record.

Start with preservation, not enhancement
- Handle fragile originals carefully. The US National Archives advises keeping physical originals after digitization and avoiding automatic-feed scanners for fragile, bent, weak, or valuable material.
- Create a high-quality master scan that includes the whole photograph. Save it without AI changes, destructive cropping, or repeated lossy compression.
- Record names, approximate date, location, photographer, source album, inscriptions, and uncertainty in separate metadata.
- Make a working copy. Apply rotation, crop, tone, dust, tear, scratch, face, color, and enlargement changes as separate reversible stages.
- Export a labeled viewing copy and retain the untouched master plus intermediate files.
How to compare restoration tools
Use three representative crops: a face, a textured area such as fabric or foliage, and a damaged boundary containing text or architecture. Compare the same source at full size. Check whether the tool changes eye shape, teeth, hairline, age, skin, jewelry, uniform details, insignia, handwriting, building edges, repeated patterns, or people in the background. A sharper result is not necessarily a more accurate result.
For colorization, treat skin, clothing, vehicles, flags, interiors, and landscape colors as hypotheses unless another source confirms them. Keep a visible label such as “AI-enhanced viewing copy” or “colorized estimate,” especially in family trees, archives, exhibits, journalism, and research.
Privacy and consent
Old photographs can identify living people, children, relatives, addresses, military units, medical contexts, religious practice, or other sensitive facts. Before using a cloud service, review retention, deletion, model-training choices, subprocessors, region, account visibility, sharing defaults, and face-processing terms. Obtain permission where appropriate and prefer local processing for confidential collections.
When manual restoration is safer
- The image is evidence for legal, historical, journalistic, forensic, or genealogical claims.
- A face is too small or damaged to support a reliable reconstruction.
- Text, badges, uniforms, artwork, or architecture must remain exact.
- The original is rare, fragile, culturally sensitive, or subject to archive rules.
- The AI repeatedly changes identity or introduces details that cannot be independently verified.
Recommendation
Use Photoshop when you need reversible layers and manual control, MyHeritage when family-photo organization and clearly marked enhancement are useful, and GFPGAN or Real-ESRGAN when local open-source processing fits your technical ability. Test mobile and browser services only with non-sensitive copies until their privacy and retention terms meet your needs. Always keep the master scan, disclose synthetic changes, and choose historical fidelity over dramatic sharpness.
