This guide was reviewed on September 8, 2026 against comma.ai documentation, the openpilot repository, and NHTSA driver-assistance guidance. We did not install or road-test the system. Vehicle control is safety-critical: verify current official compatibility and follow the manufacturer instructions rather than relying on a directory article.

What openpilot does

The official openpilot repository describes the software as upgrading the driver-assistance system in supported cars. Its safety documentation characterizes openpilot as Adaptive Cruise Control and Automated Lane Centering. A camera-based driver-monitoring function warns when it detects distraction.

These functions do not make a vehicle autonomous. NHTSA Level 2 guidance says the system may assist with steering and acceleration or braking at the same time, while the driver stays fully engaged and attentive.

Compatibility must be exact

The official supported-cars list contains vehicle-specific requirements and limitations. Compatibility cannot be inferred from the manufacturer name alone. Different model years, trims, factory camera or radar packages, steering interfaces, and security architectures may change support or available functions.

Do not buy hardware or install software until the exact vehicle row and required parts have been checked. Recheck the list immediately before purchase because support changes over time.

Safety rules that should not be weakened

  • Remain alert, watch the road, and be ready to brake, steer, or cancel at all times.
  • Never treat driver monitoring as permission to stop supervising.
  • Do not disable or weaken driver-monitoring or actuator-safety checks.
  • Avoid experimental branches or third-party forks in a road vehicle unless you fully understand and lawfully validate their safety implications.
  • Stop using the system if mounting, calibration, alerts, controls, visibility, or vehicle behavior is abnormal.
  • Follow official installation, maintenance, and update instructions.

The openpilot safety document explicitly requires an attentive driver and strongly discourages forks with missing or weakened safety code.

Data and privacy

The openpilot repository states that driving data is uploaded to comma servers by default and may include road-facing camera, CAN, GPS, motion, thermal, crash, and system logs. It says driver-facing camera and microphone logging require an explicit opt-in and that data collection can be disabled. Read the current privacy policy and device settings before driving, especially when passengers, employees, or fleet vehicles are involved.

Development versus driving

The project includes tools for simulation, log replay, plotting, and software development on computers. That does not mean a normal PC can safely replace the supported in-vehicle hardware. Development instructions and on-road installation are different workflows with different risk.

Bottom line

Consider openpilot only after confirming exact vehicle support, hardware, legal context, data settings, and willingness to supervise continuously. It is a Level 2 assistance system: the driver drives and monitors at all times.
