AI in Marketing: what works, what doesn't, and what it costs (October 2026)

AI is reliably useful for first drafts of marketing copy and for turning a brief into variants: a randomized trial of 444 professionals, marketers among them, found writing tasks took 37% less time at higher rated quality. Evidence for ads and personalization is promising but comes mostly from working papers and single platforms. Several uses are barred or risky: AI-generated fake reviews, mass-produced search pages, AI-voice calls without consent, and AI stand-ins for real survey respondents.

State of AI in Marketing · October 2026

As of October 2026, AI in marketing is ready for drafting copy and ideas, still early for ad images, personalized messages and search content, and not ready for fake reviews, mass-produced pages, AI-voice calls without consent, or replacing real customer research.

What AI can reliably do in Marketing today

  1. 1

Proven Draft marketing and business writing in less time at higher rated quality.

    Evidence

Noy and Zhang, working-paper version of the 2023 Science study: 444 college-educated professionals, including marketers, grant writers and consultants; time fell 37% and quality ratings rose 0.45 standard deviations. About 68% of users submitted AI drafts with little editing. Source ↗

  2. 2

Proven Help marketing and R&D staff produce product ideas, with one person using AI matching a two-person team.

    Evidence

Harvard/Wharton field experiment at Procter & Gamble ("The Cybernetic Teammate", 2025): 776 professionals randomized to work alone or in pairs, with or without AI; individuals with AI matched the performance of teams without AI and produced more balanced solutions. Source ↗

  3. 3

Early Generate ad images that click as well as human-made ones.

    Evidence

SSRN working paper, "AI in Disguise": 4,633 pairs of AI-generated and human-made ads from the same advertisers on Taboola, 369 million impressions; no detectable average click-through disadvantage. Images that looked AI-made performed worse. Source ↗

  4. 4

Early Tailor message variants to audience traits.

    Evidence

Scientific Reports 2024, 7 experiments with about 1,688 participants: 30 of 33 tested message variants were directionally more persuasive and 20 were significantly so (61%). Measured persuasion and stated willingness to pay, not sales. Source ↗

  5. 5

Early Support search content that is accurate, reviewed and useful to readers.

    Evidence

Google Search Central guidance: generative AI content is allowed, but it must be fact-checked before publishing, and generating many pages without adding value can violate spam policy. A policy statement, not outcome data. Source ↗

A brief and audience data go in, AI drafts copy and variants, and a marketer edits and approves.

What it can't do, or where the risk is

  1. 1

Can't Generate fake reviews or testimonials, including AI-written ones.

    Evidence

FTC final rule on fake reviews (Aug 2024) bans reviews by people who do not exist, such as AI-generated reviews, plus bought reviews, undisclosed insider reviews, review suppression and fake social-media indicators. A separate FTC action in Sept 2024 (Operation AI Comply) targeted the AI writing tool Rytr over generated fake reviews. Source ↗

  2. 2

Can't Mass-produce AI pages to manipulate search rankings.

    Evidence

Google spam policies: scaled content abuse is "many pages generated for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings and not helping users", and explicitly includes using generative AI tools to do so. Source ↗

  3. 3

Can't Place AI-voice marketing calls without prior consent.

    Evidence

FCC Declaratory Ruling FCC 24-17 (adopted 2 Feb 2024): AI-generated voices are "artificial" under the TCPA, so callers need prior express consent, and prior express written consent for telemarketing. Source ↗

  4. 4

Can't Stand in for real survey respondents.

    Evidence

Bisbee et al., Political Analysis 2024: ChatGPT-simulated survey answers were less variable than real ANES data and changed between April and July 2023 reruns; 48% of regression coefficients differed significantly from the real data, and 32% of those reversed sign. Source ↗

  5. 5

Can't Support exaggerated claims about what your AI product can do.

    Evidence

FTC Operation AI Comply (25 Sept 2024): five actions against deceptive AI claims, including the "AI lawyer" service DoNotPay ($193,000 penalty) and business-opportunity schemes with reported losses of at least $25 million and $15.9 million. Source ↗

AI-written fake reviews are banned, AI-voice calls need consent, and simulated survey respondents change real conclusions.

Where to start

Small business marketer

Use AI for first drafts of emails, posts and ad copy, then edit every piece. Keep AI out of reviews and testimonials, and get consent before any call or text.

Content and SEO team

Publish AI-assisted pages only after a human fact-checks them and they add something readers cannot get elsewhere. Do not scale page counts to chase rankings.

Agency or enterprise marketing lead

Run a controlled test of AI-made creative against human-made, label AI-generated people or voices, and keep a record of consent and claims review.

Regulation & risk

Laws, rules and official guidance that commonly apply when AI is used in Marketing.

Cost & deployment reality

Verified starting prices for 3 of the tools below: $17 to $39 per month (median $29).

Pricing is per seat plus usage credits. Jasper lists Pro at $69 per seat per month ($59 billed annually), with two brand voices; Business is custom-priced on a 12-month minimum. HubSpot lists Marketing Hub Starter at $20 per seat per month billed monthly, and Professional at $800 a month on an annual commitment with a $3,000 one-time onboarding fee; AI features draw HubSpot Credits at $0.010 each.

Review time is the cost to budget for: in the Noy and Zhang trial about 68% of users submitted AI drafts without editing, which is the pattern that leads to the legal and quality problems below.

Legal exposure is mostly about what you publish and how you contact people. CAN-SPAM penalties reach $53,088 per violating email; the FCC treats AI-generated voices as "artificial" under the TCPA, requiring prior express consent. The FTC's fake-review rule bans AI-generated reviews, and Google's scaled content abuse policy covers generative AI pages made to manipulate rankings.

Check creative before it runs. Taboola ads that looked AI-made performed worse than images that looked human-made across 369 million impressions. Do not use simulated respondents for research: 48% of regression coefficients differed from real survey data.
