AI in Finance: what works, what doesn't, and what it costs (October 2026)

AI is already routine in finance for fraud detection and basic customer service, and unproven where decisions need judgment. The US Treasury credits machine learning with $1 billion in recovered check fraud, and about 37% of Americans used a bank chatbot in 2022. Credit underwriting, anti-money-laundering alerts and research summaries show gains in company or regulator-reported data. Regulators say existing rules still apply: lenders must give specific reasons for denials, and the SEC has fined firms for overstating their AI. Start with fraud and servicing, keep people on credit and advice decisions, and verify identity beyond voice or video.

State of AI in Finance · October 2026

As of October 2026, AI is ready for fraud detection and routine bank service, still early for credit underwriting, anti-money-laundering alerts and research summaries, and not ready to deny credit without reasons, verify identity by voice or video, or run chat unattended.

What AI can reliably do in Finance today

  1. 1

Proven Detect payment fraud with machine learning at national scale.

    Evidence

US Treasury, Oct 17, 2024: its Office of Payment Integrity prevented and recovered over $4 billion in fraud and improper payments in fiscal 2024 (up from $652.7 million), including $1 billion recovered by using machine learning to identify Treasury check fraud. Government self-report. Source ↗

  2. 2

Proven Answer routine account questions through bank chatbots at very large scale.

    Evidence

CFPB, June 2023: about 37% of the US population (roughly 98 million people) used a bank chatbot in 2022, all ten largest commercial banks deploy one, and Bank of America's Erica passed 1 billion interactions by Oct 2022. The same report documents failures (see Can't). Source ↗

  3. 3

Early Expand credit approvals and lower rates with machine-learning underwriting under regulator monitoring.

    Evidence

CFPB, Aug 2019: in data supplied under its first no-action letter, Upstart's model approved 27% more applicants at 16% lower average APRs than a traditional model, with no disparities needing further fair-lending analysis. Company data; CFPB said it was not an endorsement. Source ↗

  4. 4

Early Cut false alerts and find more true risk in anti-money-laundering monitoring.

    Evidence

Google Cloud press release, June 21, 2023: HSBC reported two to four times more true-positive risk detected and alert volumes down more than 60% using Google Cloud's AML AI. Vendor and bank report, not independent. Source ↗

  5. 5

Early Summarize filings, research and internal policies for human review.

    Evidence

FINRA Regulatory Notice 24-09, June 27, 2024: recognizes uses such as summarizing documents and research, synthesizing data, and generating compliance summaries for human review, while stating that FINRA rules are technology neutral and still apply. Source ↗

Transactions stream in, AI scores the risk and flags them, and an analyst reviews and decides.

What it can't do, or where the risk is

  1. 1

Can't Skip specific reasons when AI helps deny credit.

    Evidence

CFPB Circular 2023-03, Sept 19, 2023: 'Creditors are not excused from their adverse action notice obligations under ECOA simply because they rely on complex algorithmic underwriting models.' Source ↗

  2. 2

Can't Market AI capabilities the firm does not have.

    Evidence

SEC, Mar 18, 2024: investment advisers Delphia ($225,000) and Global Predictions ($175,000) were penalized $400,000 combined for false or misleading claims about their use of AI, under the Advisers Act and Marketing Rule. Source ↗

  3. 3

Can't Guarantee fair-lending outcomes from AI underwriting without testing and documentation.

    Evidence

Massachusetts Attorney General, July 10, 2025: Earnest Operations paid $2.5 million over allegations that its AI underwriting used a college default-rate variable with disparate impact, undocumented overrides of its model, and automatic rejection of applicants without a green card. Earnest denied the allegations. Source ↗

  4. 4

Can't Handle disputes and escalations in customer chat with no route to a human.

    Evidence

CFPB, June 2023: customers reported chatbots that failed to recognize disputes, gave inaccurate information and trapped them in 'doom loops'; the Bureau warned institutions can violate consumer-protection law when chatbots do this. Source ↗

  5. 5

Can't Verify identity or authorize payments by voice, photo or video alone.

    Evidence

FinCEN Alert FIN-2024-Alert004, Nov 13, 2024: reports of suspicious activity involving deepfake media rose from 2023 into 2024; criminals use generative AI to create altered or synthetic ID documents and photos to open accounts. FinCEN did not publish a count. Source ↗

Credit denials still need specific reasons, firms are fined for overstating AI, and deepfakes defeat voice and video checks.

Where to start

Bank or lender

Keep a model inventory, produce specific adverse-action reasons for every AI-assisted denial, and run disparate-impact tests before and after launch.

Advisory or brokerage firm

Review every AI-generated client message under your existing communication and supervision rules, and make sure public claims about your AI match what it does.

Customer

Treat a chatbot's answer as information only. For a dispute, ask for a human agent and confirm in writing, and never approve a payment because of a voice or video call alone.

Regulation & risk

Laws, rules and official guidance that commonly apply when AI is used in Finance.

Cost & deployment reality

Verified starting prices for 3 of the tools below: $9 to $95 per month (median $25).

Consumer-facing AI is usually bundled into fees. Betterment's automated investing costs $5 a month under $24,000 and 0.25% a year between $24,000 and $1 million, with a premium advisor tier at 0.65%. For banks, the CFPB report cites an industry estimate of about $8 billion a year in chatbot savings, roughly $0.70 per interaction. Treasury's machine-learning program recovered $1 billion in check fraud in fiscal 2024. Staff tools such as Microsoft 365 Copilot Business are $18 per user per month on an annual term (promotional price to Dec 31, 2026; $21 list).

Compliance is the larger cost: Earnest agreed to maintain a written fair-lending testing and governance system for AI models as part of a $2.5 million settlement, and FINRA says firms must apply supervision and communications rules to generative AI.

Supervisors are checking claims about AI. The SEC's fiscal 2026 examination priorities say examiners will review the accuracy of registrants' AI representations and their policies for monitoring AI use. FINRA applies the same rules whether a firm builds a tool or buys one, including AI embedded in commercial products. For lenders, document every model and be able to give specific denial reasons under CFPB Circular 2023-03.

A typical failure pattern is the chatbot with no exit. The CFPB found inaccurate answers, unrecognized disputes and doom loops in bank chat, so keep a human escalation path. On fraud, identity checks that rely on a voice or a face are weakening: FinCEN's alert asks institutions to file reports tagged FIN-2024-DEEPFAKEFRAUD and to look for altered photos and webcam plugins.
