AI in Travel and Hospitality: what works, what doesn't, and what it costs (October 2026)

AI in travel and hospitality works for customer-service chat, draft translations and demand and price forecasting, and fails where a traveler treats its output as fact. In a benchmark of 1,225 trip-planning queries, GPT-4-Turbo produced a plan meeting every constraint 0.6% of the time, and a tourist in Peru was sent toward a canyon that does not exist. A tribunal held Air Canada responsible for its chatbot's refund advice. Use AI to draft and answer routine questions, have staff check prices, policies and itineraries before they go out, and do not publish AI-written reviews.

State of AI in Travel and Hospitality · October 2026

As of October 2026, AI is ready for assisting support agents, still early for guest chat, translation and forecasting, and not ready to plan trips unaided or write reviews.

What AI can reliably do in Travel and Hospitality today

  1. 1

Proven Help human support agents resolve more issues per hour, with the largest gains for newer staff.

    Evidence

Brynjolfsson, Li and Raymond, NBER Working Paper 31161 (published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics, 2025): 5,179 customer-support agents at one software company. AI suggestions raised issues resolved per hour by 14% on average and 34% for novices, with little gain for experienced agents. Not a travel or hotel contact centre. Source ↗

  2. 2

Early Answer routine guest questions in chat and reduce the number of contacts that reach a human agent.

    Evidence

Airbnb Q3 2025 shareholder letter: its AI assistant in the U.S. reduced people's need to contact a human agent by around 15% and cut typical resolution time from hours to seconds for some people. Company-reported, one large platform. Source ↗

  3. 3

Early Draft translations of guest messages, signs and menus for a fluent reviewer to check.

    Evidence

2024 study: GPT-4 made about as many errors as junior human translators across three language pairs and three domains (news, technology, biomedical), stayed below senior translators, and tended toward overly literal wording. Not tested on hospitality text. Source ↗

  4. 4

Early Forecast monthly tourist arrivals from search-engine data more accurately than older machine-learning baselines.

    Evidence

Law, Li, Fong and Han, Annals of Tourism Research (2019): a deep-learning model using search-intensity indices for monthly Macau tourist arrivals significantly outperformed support vector regression and artificial neural network models. One destination. Source ↗

  5. 5

Early Set prices for add-on offers (such as baggage or seats) better than hand-written rules.

    Evidence

Shukla, Kolbeinsson, Marla and Yellepeddi, SSRN working paper (Jan 2020): A/B test on one airline's website. AI-driven offer pricing improved revenue per offer by 25% and conversion by 17% against human rule-based pricing. Single airline, not peer-reviewed. Source ↗

A guest asks a question in chat, AI drafts the answer or a translation, and staff check it before it is sent.

What it can't do, or where the risk is

  1. 1

Can't Plan multi-constraint trips unaided; GPT-4-Turbo met all constraints in 0.6% of 1,225 benchmark queries.

    Evidence

TravelPlanner benchmark (Xie et al., arXiv 2402.01622, v4 Oct 2024): 1,225 queries with budget, transport and preference constraints. GPT-4-Turbo reached a 0.6% final pass rate and the other models tested passed none. Newer models were not tested in this paper, so rerun checks before relying on it. Source ↗

  2. 2

Can't Guarantee that suggested places, routes and details exist.

    Evidence

BBC Travel, Sept 26, 2025: a tourist paid about $160 to reach a rural road near Mollepata, Peru, looking for a ''Sacred Canyon of Humantay'' that does not exist, according to local trek operator Miguel Angel Gongora Meza. The article also cites a 2024 survey in which about 33% of travelers who used AI to plan trips said it included false information. Source ↗

  3. 3

Can't Disclaim what your chatbot tells customers.

    Evidence

Moffatt v. Air Canada, 2024 BCCRT 149 (Feb 14, 2024): the tribunal held the airline liable for its website chatbot's wrong bereavement-fare advice and awarded C$812.02 (C$650.88 damages, C$36.14 interest, C$125 fees). Source ↗

  4. 4

Can't Post or buy AI-generated reviews and testimonials.

    Evidence

FTC final rule announced Aug 14, 2024: bans fake reviews and testimonials, including AI-generated reviews that misrepresent they are by someone who does not exist, and lets the FTC seek civil penalties against knowing violators. Effective 60 days after Federal Register publication. Source ↗

  5. 5

Can't Treat guest passport, payment and loyalty data as low-risk when feeding it into new tools.

    Evidence

FTC, Oct 9, 2024: Marriott and Starwood settled over three data breaches from 2014 to 2020 affecting 344 million+ customers, with a 20-year security program, data-minimization duties and $52 million to 49 states and DC. Not an AI case; it shows the cost of exposing guest data. Source ↗

Trip plans can fail constraints, invented places can send travelers astray, and chatbot answers can bind the company.

Where to start

Small hotel or tour operator

Use AI to draft replies and translations, and have staff check every price, policy and booking detail before it goes out.

Larger travel brand

Pilot a guest-chat assistant on routine questions with a handoff to a person, and test it against your published refund and change policies. A tribunal has held an airline to its chatbot's words.

Traveler

Use AI for ideas, then check every address, opening time and route on an official or map source before you pay or set out.

Regulation & risk

Laws, rules and official guidance that commonly apply when AI is used in Travel and Hospitality.

Cost & deployment reality

Verified starting prices for 2 of the tools below: $9.9 to $49 per month (median $29.45).

Guest-service tools are usually priced per seat, per minute or per resolution. Intercom lists $0.99 per Fin outcome plus seats from $29 to $132 a month. Virtual Reception lists $41 a month (billed $490 a year) for up to 250 minutes and $249 a month for 2,000 minutes. DocsBot lists a Personal plan at $49 a month for one bot trained on your own pages.

Errors cost more than software. A tribunal ordered C$812.02 over one wrong chatbot answer, and guest-data failures led to a $52 million payment to 49 states and DC from Marriott and Starwood. Budget staff time to check prices, policies and bookings.

Chat assistants fit routine, documented questions. Airbnb reported a 15% drop in contacts reaching human agents in the U.S., and its assistant can also change or cancel reservations in chat. Planning is different: TravelPlanner's top-scoring model passed 0.6% of queries, and the BBC documented a tourist sent to a Peruvian canyon that does not exist.

A typical failure pattern: a bot is trained on a policy page, a customer relies on a wrong answer, and the company is held to it, as Air Canada was in 2024. Test the bot against your published refund and change rules, give it a handoff to a person, and keep records of what it said.
